Rules, Regulations,
and Transition Costs in Transition Bulgaria - This
report presents the findings of a study made by Yordanka Gancheva, Researcher
at the Institute for Market Economics, Sofia, within the framework of
the project on Rules, Regulations and Transaction Costs in Transition
Bulgaria funded under the Individual Research Support Scheme of the Open
Society Support Foundation, Prague. The Shadow
Economy in Bulgaria
- Harvard University, Agency for Economic Analisys
and Forcasting, IME. Bulgarian GDP statistics using revenue approach give
growth rates 2 percentage points lower than the expenditure approach for
1998 and 1999. In other words data based on what people actually spend
show 5.4% (1998) and 4.4% (1999). GDP growth, while official figure are
3.5% and 2.4%, respectively. This is evidence that there are underreported
incomes. It is of interest for statistical and economic policy purposes
to have more detailed information about the discrepancy between official
statistics and activities not covered by the official statistical system.
It is particularly interesting to know the size and structure of unreported,
hidden economic activities (shadow economy). Mortgage
Financing in Bulgaria
- This paper is especially redrafted for the needs
of the USAID Pension Reform Project and CARANA Corp. Round Table on Mortgage
Bonds Horizon as Long Term Investment (October 23, 2000, Sofia). Along
with IME, OECD has the copyrights for that early version. The current
version is completely reedited and updated; the only missing data are
on the housing industry developments in the recent years, which become
available when the paper was ready for print. The copyrights of this version
belong to IME and the authors. Evaluation
of the post-privatization monitoring system in Bulgaria
- These recommendations
and conclusions are drawn from a CASE research foundation & IME survey,
based on in-depth structured interviews with 11 companies. Fiscal Effects
of the Privatization: the Case of Poland and Bulgaria
- At the request of the Bulgarian authorities, IME,
in co-operation with Bulgarian counterparts, assists in implementing structural
reforms in the Bulgarian economy. The assistance involves developing and
carrying out reform programs and evaluating their results in priority
areas of structural and institutional reforms, with particular reference,
among others, to the process of the ownership transformation. This includes
the privatization and post-privatization monitoring system. Reform Models in Latin America and Central and Eastern Europe
There is no clear-cut solution to the problems involved
in different individual pension reforms. However, thanks mostly to the
Latin America's experience there is little doubt as to which measures
of these reforms work and which do not. Needs
